Cleanup Standards
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have set out risk standards for most chemicals which may be released into the environment. The risk of each chemical is equivalent to the risk involved with the following activities:
- Living two months with a cigarette smoker
- Traveling 300 miles by car
- Traveling 1000 miles by airplane
- Traveling 6 miles by canoe
To meet these risk standards, the maximum acceptable levels of the main contaminants at the PGDP, TCE and Tc99, are 5 ug/L and 900 piCu/L, respectively. Another contaminant of interest are PCBs, which have a minimum concentration level of 0.0005 parts per million.
